Difference Between New Hampshire Prison and Federal Prison

What is the Difference Between Federal Prison and New Hampshire Prison?

The New Hampshire Department of Corrections Agency is tasked with managing state prison facilities that hold persons in temporary detention or those serving a jail sentence. Federal prisons are a higher hierarchy in that the government of the Federation oversees the system. As their names suggest, New Hampshire prisons are designed for New Hampshire state convicts, while federal prisons are for confining persons convicted in Federal District Courts. While state convicts are persons found guilty of violating the New Hampshire criminal code, federal convicts are guilty of violating federal laws.

How to Lookup an Inmate in New Hampshire

Interested parties can obtain New Hampshire inmate records or look up an inmate at Concord's New Hampshire Department of Corrections Records Office. The information is also available electronically by visiting the Inmate Locator Page of the agency website. Requestors will be required to enter all or part of the first and last names of the inmate in the search bar. The inmate locator should return active sentencing information. An active sentence shows the original minimum and maximum release dates. Active sentencing information about pending consecutive sentences, out-of-state inmates housed in the facility, technical parole violations may not be available.

Inmates can get visits only twice every week: Sunday and Saturday. Official visits such as those from attorneys, clergy persons, or an agent of the law enforcement department do not come under this category. However, all visitors must get approval from authorized agency staff before visiting. Be sure to notify the department of the visit ahead of time. Inmates may also receive letters by mail of up to 10 pages.

They are also entitled to receive up to two packages from an agency-authorized vendor during the holiday season. Other items approved include books and magazine subscriptions from recognized mail-order companies or publishers. Be sure to include the receipt of the item in the package. Each correction unit has specifications as to how many items can be allowed within the inmate's housing unit. Parties wishing to send money to an inmate must be on the inmate's approved visitors list to be eligible. There are also third-party websites that facilitate online transfers of funds. Other routes include kiosk deposits, personal checks, or money orders. Be sure to indicate the name and identification number of the inmate. New Hampshire County Jails

Each County in New Hampshire has a jail facility. They are under the management of the local law enforcement agency - either the Sheriff or the City Police Department. Local jails hold persons arrested for misdemeanors, booking trials in state courts, and occasionally federal prisoners in transit. Like every incarceration facility, some rules and regulations guide the visit and welfare of inmates. To look up information about an inmate, visit the local law enforcement agency to inquire. Some of them may float an inmates' register on the department pages of the county website.

How Does the Federal Prison System Work?

The federal prison system of the United States operates a network of at least 122 correctional institutions. Each facility has a designated level of security: low-level, medium, or high-level security. Low-level security facilities are for non-violent offenders, while high-level security is for the most dangerous offenders.

Interested parties may look up any inmate in any federal prison by name or number. Number searches are more reliable because no two persons use the same identification number, whether in the past or the present. Identification numbers often reflect the involvement of other agencies in the case. For this reason, identification numbers or federal inmates maybe 1 of 4 prefixes:

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

Department of Corrections DC (DCDC)

Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS)

Bureau of Prisons (BOP)

Persons wishing to send money or packages to federal inmates must route the message through the designated quarters of the Federal Bureau of prisons:

P.O. Box 474701
Des Moines, Iowa 50947

It is then dispatched after assessment to the appropriate facility. There are no federal prisons in New Hampshire.
